8 Warning Signs Your Aircon Needs Repair
Spot the early warning signs your aircon needs repair — weak airflow, warm air, leaks, strange noises and odours — before a small fault becomes an expensive one.

Aircon faults rarely announce themselves loudly. They start small — a slightly warmer afternoon, a faint rattle — and by the time the unit stops completely, the repair is usually bigger and pricier. Catching these eight signs early saves money.
1. Not as cold as before
The most common complaint. It points to low refrigerant, a dirty coil, or a blocked filter. All three are fixable, but only if you catch them early.
2. Weak or uneven airflow
If air barely reaches across the room, the filter may be clogged or the blower may be struggling. Restricted airflow forces the unit to work harder.
3. Warm air instead of cool
When a unit blows warm air while running, the compressor or refrigerant is usually at fault. This is a repair, not a cleaning job.
4. Water leaking or dripping
Condensation that doesn't drain correctly usually means a blocked drain line or low gas. Left alone, leaks can damage walls, ceilings and electronics.
5. Strange noises
Rattling, hissing or grinding sounds point to loose parts, refrigerant issues or a failing fan motor. Noises only get worse.
6. Bad smells
A musty or sour smell signals mould and bacteria in the coil or drain pan — a cleaning or chemical wash is usually the fix.
7. The unit keeps tripping the breaker
Frequent tripping points to an electrical fault or an overworked compressor. This one should be checked quickly.
8. Your bill climbs for no reason
If usage hasn't changed but costs have, the unit is losing efficiency — a hidden problem that is slowly costing you.
What to do
If you spot one or two of these, you don't need to panic — but do get it checked. A good technician diagnoses on the spot, quotes before work begins, and only repairs what's actually wrong.
